Let a Programmable Coffee Maker Brew for You

Programmable Coffee Maker

It use to be the only programmable coffee maker was your significant other or roommate who got out of bed first to make the coffee. And while there are a lot of things machines can’t do, when it comes to making your morning pick-me-up, modern coffee machines can’t be beat. They’re more reliable than any roommate and never subject you to moods.

One of the first decisions to make when buying any coffee maker is the same as for buying a bra…what’s the cup size. There are programmable models from single serve up to 15-cup machines.

Unfortunately, coffee machine companies don’t agree on exactly how many ounces a cup should hold. So one brand’s 5-cup machine may make only the same as another brand’s 4-cup. A good rule of thumb is to expect only about 4 to 6 ounces per stated cup. So if the specifications say 5 cups, expect about a total of 20 to 30 ounces.

Your next consideration would be to pick the brewing process type. Before the 1970s the most popular choice was the percolation method. But percolators have fallen from favor because the quality of the coffee varies the longer they continue to brew.

Today most people prefer the automatic drip type which delivers more consistent flavor. These machines not only make good fresh coffee, but usually come with a warming plate to keep a cup or mug hot. Some also have insulated pots which can keep the coffee hot for hours.

If you’re looking for greater drink variety than regular coffee, an espresso machine lets you get as varied and fancy as you want. Espresso machines use a finer grind of coffee beans than a regular coffee maker and require greater care in brew preparation. But some expresso makers can use prepared packets called pods or K-Cups, which simplify the process. And like some regular coffee makers, fully automated espresso machines have a built-in grinder, so all you do is add the beans and water.

While the idea of a programmable machine sounds good, maybe you aren’t sure what exactly can be programmed. The most basic models have a clock which lets you set a time for the brewing to start. More expensive models can let you set brewing start and finish times, the water temperature, and the desired cup size.

The prices for programmable coffee makers range from about twenty to two hundred dollars. So depending on what you need, you should be able to find a model which fits your budget.

Programmable coffee makers are ideal for anyone who likes the idea of having a fresh cup of coffee ready to drink first thing in the morning. And with an occasional cleaning, they should keep you satisfied longer than some marriages.
